ABOUT DR KEENE

Dr Greg Keene is one of only several orthopaedic surgeons in Australia who exclusively specialize in knee surgery. He has performed over 25,000 knee operations and has helped many Australian national, international and olympic sports stars to continue their careers after serious knee injuries.

After completing orthopaedic surgery training in Australia Dr Keene did an AO Travelling Fellowship studying orthopaedic surgery in St Gallen, Switzerland under Prof. Hardi Weber for 6 months. He then spend 12 months in Toronto Canada as a Zimmer Overseas Travelling Fellow studying advanced knee surgery techniques under Prof. Robert Jackson ("the father of Arthroscopy") . He is the only SA knee surgeon to have received this specialized training in sports knee surgery for a full year.

He currently performs about 1000 knee operations per year with an emphasis on arthroscopic surgery and a particular interest in arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions where he has pioneered and published a number of new techniques and advances. He is also a knee replacement surgeon performing about 250 knee replacements per year using the latest artificial knee joint technology. He has been the consultant knee surgeon to the Adelaide Crows AFL team and the 04 AFL premiers Port Power.

He was a founding partner and Joint Managing Director of SPORTSMED.SA in Adelaide, South Australia. This is the largest sports medicine clinic/hospital complex in Australia and one of the largest in the world, employing over 200 people. It is situated at 32 Payneham Rd, Stepney, SA 5069 (central branch), with branches at Morphett Vale (South) and Henley Beach (West).

Apart from becoming a leading sports medicine & surgery center, SPORTSMED.SA has become a leading International Joint Replacement center performing almost the same number of joint replacements per year as the famous Mayo clinic in America. There are about 1800 knee replacements performed privately in the whole of South Australia per year and almost 1000 of these are performed at SPORTSMED.SA. By comparison in all of the public hospitals in metropolitan and rural South Australia combined there are only 800 knee replacements performed per year. These figures emphasize the enormous experience and expertise that has developed at our clinic and the patient and referring doctor confidence in our skills.

Dr Keene has delivered over 100 invited lectures on knee surgery topics in 21 different countries and currently lectures overseas about 12 times per year. He is the author of 23 published papers on knee surgery topics and a number of book chapters. In 1984 he was awarded the prestigious John Joyce Prize in London for his pioneering work on Arthroscopic Electrosurgery, a technique that is now used world wide and surpasses laser surgery in usefulness. He maintains an active interest in research and teaching and established the Sportsmed.SA fellowship program providing a year of specialized teaching and research for young orthopaedic surgeons. These 3 positions are highly sort after and we receive 30-40 applications every year from young surgeons all over the world. In 2000 he was invited onto an 8 man international team of surgeons to design a new Minimally Invasive Unicompartmental Knee Replacement which is now the 3rd most used partial knee replacement in the world. He was also heavily involved in a project with the BrainLab organisation in Munich to develop the most sophisticated Computer Aided Surgery program available to allow new knees to be inserted with a degree of precision that is beyond human capability. He now lectures extensively overseas on these new technologies. In 04 he lectured in 15 cities in 14 counties (57 lectures and 12 surgical workshops). In 2004 he was awarded Honorary Membership of the Arthroscopy Association of North America in recognition of his contribution to knee surgery. This is an honor given to few surgeons outside of North America.

He has been on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Sports Medicine and the Knee Journal. He was on the executive Committee of the International Arthroscopy Association being program Chairman several times, and has also been President of the Australian Knee Society.

Dr Keene has 4 sons and 2 daughters. He was an rower and footballer in his younger years and coached rowing for his old school for many years winning the Head of the River several times. He still bike rides, snow skis, works out in the gym and plays tennis. His recent passion was Porsche Racing and has raced in the Australian Porsche Cup Championship and Nations Cup Championship in a variety of racing Porches for nearly 10 years. He has just retired from racing in the Australian Carrera Cup Championship, but plans to maintain an interest in tarmac rallying with his partner Amanda and the children. In 2002 he and daughter Katie were the 3 Peaks Rally Champions and in 2004 with son Raph placed second in the Dutton Rally.
